Chapter 27

Ethan walks out of the conference room and spots Jonah returning to their cubicle at the other end of the hall.

“Chelsea’s parents just got here,” Ethan says when he gets closer. “They’re in the conference room.” When he met them, Ethan felt a burst of sympathy. They looked exhausted, and their tired eyes were flooded with grief. “Did you get the knife booked into evidence?”

Jonah hangs his coat over the back of his chair. He called Ethan less than an hour ago, saying the harbor unit’s dive team recovered a knife not far from the location Carr had marked on Ethan’s map.

“Yeah, just now. I’m having them send it to the Latent Print Unit even though there’s probably no prints after it’s been submerged in water for two days.”

“How did it go with the attorney?”

“Not bad, but not great.” Jonah speaks in a low tone, ensuring Chelsea’s parents couldn’t overhear, even though they were at the other end of the hall. “Chelsea only had a preliminary meeting with her. She paid a retainer and was planning to file for divorce this week. Chelsea hadn’t shared many specifics—just that her husband had been unfaithful. She denied there ever being any domestic violence, but she did hint at having some damning evidence that she could use against him in the divorce proceedings. But she didn’t say what it was.”

Ethan crosses his arms. “Did she have any idea why Chelsea would go freediving with him?”

“Chelsea told her attorney she was going to tell Carr in person before she filed for divorce, which her attorney advised her was a bad idea. Chelsea said he’d been pleading with her not to divorce him until his latest business acquisition was finalized, but Chelsea said she couldn’t wait any longer. So, maybe she went with him to break the news about her decision to divorce, and he killed her. Carr had more reasons to want his wife dead than I can even count.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Did you find any evidence of an affair on his phone records?”

Ethan shakes his head. “Not so far.”

“You okay?”

Ethan looks up, realizing he was staring at the floor. Jonah studies him as he waits for Ethan’s response.

“Yeah.” He clears his throat. “Pete called earlier and said, so far, Chelsea’s autopsy doesn’t suggest anything other than an accidental drowning. She has a ligature mark around her leg, but it’s consistent with Carr’s account that she got tangled in bull kelp.”

“Hmm. Maybe what we learn from Chelsea’s parents can help us prove otherwise.” Jonah slaps him on the shoulder. “Ready to talk to them?”
